UN climate conference: Terre Des Hommes calls for the orientation of climate policy on children's rights

Berlin/Osnabrück - At the climate conference, which takes place in Bonn until June 26, Terre Des Hommes together with children and adolescents from numerous countries, calls for more commitment and a clear focus of climate policy on children's rights. The children and adolescents refer in particular to the requirements of General Comment 26, a general remark on the UN Convention on the Rights of Children, on which Terre Des Hommes has played a decisive impact, and are calling for a healthy and intact environment for children and adolescents from today and tomorrow.

At the Bonn »Intermediate Conference SB62«, government delegations, scientists and representatives of business associations, environmental and human rights organizations, including Terre Des Hommes , are discussing the climate summit that takes place from November 10th to 21st, 2025 in the Brazilian Belém. »Children make up a third of the world's population. However, they remain excluded from climate policy and their interests are not taken into account despite promises on paper, «said Joshua Hofert, board spokesman for Terre Des Hommes . "The UN Children's Rights Committee has confirmed with General Comment 26 that environmental damage and the negligent procedure against the climate crisis violate the rights of children, especially the right to a healthy environment."

Terre Des Hommes calls on the governments to plan and take up child -friendly and right -handed measures that are developed together with young people. In particular, young people affected by climate change should have a say and be allowed to perceive their right to participation.

"If the climate protection measures and national work plans do not guarantee the right of children and adolescents to a clean, safe and healthy environment, they finally miss the 1.5 degree goal of the Paris Agreement," said Joshua Hofert. »States have not only a moral, but also a legal obligation. International climate policy must ensure children's rights. "
